DIY Stamp making

Making your own stamps is fun en relatively easy. Here is a short tutorial on how to proceed!

Je eigen stempels maken is leuk en vrij makkelijk. Hier is een korte tutorial!

These are the tools you will need: I bought my erasers at Flying Tiger for € 0.5 each. I cut some of them in half with a kitchen knife. The tool with the wooden handle is a carving tool. I bought mine at Hema and it comes with 5 different blades. 4 of them are blades with a ‘gutter’, each of them with a different width. The fifth blade is straight. The handle has a hole inside and the small stick is used to change the blades. You can buy stamp making rubber at Hema or in craft stores but erasers are cheaper (and they work fine!).

Dit zal je nodig hebben: ik kocht mijn gommen voor € 0.5 bij Flying Tiger. Sommigen sneed ik in twee met een keukenmesje. Het gereedschap met het houten handvat heet een ‘guts’. Er horen verschillende mesjes bij, ik kocht mijn setje bij Hema. Vier van de mesjes hebben een gootje van verschillende breedtes en het vijfde is een plat mesje. Het stokje dient om de mesjes uit het handvat te duwen, dat is immers hol vanbinnen. Je kan bij Hema of in speciaalzaken ook rubber kopen om stempels van te maken maar gommen zijn natuurlijk een stuk goedkoper (en werken ook prima).

Draw your design on the eraser with a pencil. Start cutting around the lines with the smallest blade. The lines will end up to be the only part of the eraser that will stick out and this will be the stamp.

Teken je ontwerp met potlood op de gom. Start met rond de lijnen uit te snijden in de gom met het kleinste mesje. De potloodlijnen zullen uiteindelijk het enige deel van de gom zijn dat uitsteekt en dit zal dan de stempel vormen.

Continue carving around the lines of your design. Use a bigger blade.

Snij verder rond de lijnen van je ontwerp, gebruik een mesje met een groter gootje.

Cut out the inside parts of your design, switch between blades!

Snij de binnenkant van je ontwerp uit, wissel tussen mesjes!

Cut out the outside of your design. Start by using one of the smaller blades and then go over it using a bigger one. I use the flat blade at the end to flatten the outside of the design. Work from the outside to the inside, else you will have a hard time cutting out the corners. Finish it by paying attention to detail: cut out all the small bits.

Snij de buitenkant van je ontwerp uit. Ik gebruikte het platte mesje om helemaal op het einde de buitenkanten van het ontwerp vlak te snijden. Start met één van de kleinere mesjes en ga dan over dezelfde plek met een groter mesje. Werk van buiten naar binnen, anders ga je moeite hebben met de hoeken! Werk ten slotte alles af, snij voorzichtig alle overtollige stukjes gom weg en zorg dat alles mooi recht is.

Test your stamp and make some alterations if needed!

Test je stempel en maak aanpassingen als dit nodig is!

That’s it! Have fun! One last thing: think about it that your design has to be mirrored on the stamp. This is very important when you want to stamp text!
